According to a study conducted by 451 Research by S&P Global, manufacturing respondents report that on average, 539 employees per facility are impacted when unplanned downtime occurs, with nearly half (45%) of manufacturers indicating that more over employees are directly affected.
Addressing these incidents is time-consuming, and the urgency to resolve them can further increase the possibility of errors, potentially compromising workplace safety and causing cascading impacts on different manufacturing processes throughout a plant. This is one example of how frontline workers and managers play a pivotal role in shaping operational outcomes, and it highlights the importance of targeted digital transformation efforts that address their unique challenges.
The following three categories all play a significant role in the digital transformation driving innovation across a wide array of industries that rely on frontline employees. While each category serves specific roles and industries differently, there are several overlapping features. All three emphasize the importance of real-time communications for operational efficiency, and provide mobile access to enhance productivity and information availability for users in the field. Each also incorporates analytics, task management, and training and compliance.

- Connected worker platforms enhance operational efficiency in industrial settings by focusing on safety, compliance and continuous improvement. The platforms are designed to address inefficiencies stemming from outdated tools and fragmented communication, which can hinder collaboration among frontline teams. Moreover, CWPs help streamline operations and boost safety outcomes within the manufacturing, energy, logistics and construction segments.

Adoption challenges
Despite the benefits frontline technologies provide, there are challenges that hinder their adoption and implementation. A significant issue is the training and skill gaps among frontline workers, as many employees struggle to readily adapt to new technologies, resulting in confusion and inefficiencies that can lower return on investment. Furthermore, the integration of new technologies with legacy systems presents substantial hurdles, as many organizations still rely on outdated tools and software not designed for modern frontline operations. This reliance can lead to data silos and communication gaps, emphasizing the necessity of integrating new tools to maximize their potential and enhance operational efficiency.
